5 0 out of 5 stars differently and better, 11 June 2009
By Alexander Scherr -
all my reviews (REAL NAME)
I have both 1 and Kindle Kindle 2 held, therefore I am already committed to the basic idea: E-Ink reading in a slim form factor with a direct connection to a wide range of books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my experience, Kindle, and it is seriously enhanced my reading.
The DX was not the ideal upgrade for me, but I have two functions over the edge of the larger display, and the native PDF reader. I now have the DX in my hands, and can PROS, CONS report and neutrals:
PROS:
- a larger screen is a definite plus. I use the larger font on my Kindle 2 () older eyes, and in this way I get a lot size of text per page on the DX. That makes the whole experience of reading book-like (and should be a boon to people who buy large-print books.)
- The screen is sharper and sharper than my Kindle 2 in a side view-by-side comparison, the text is darker and the contrast is much better, which for better visibility in general.
- On a side note, the larger screen also makes it possible to read poetry on the Kindle, even with large font sizes. Cut Older Kindle, the smaller screen of lines, so you would lose the feeling that the writer ended the line. On the DX, you can see the entire line is exactly what the poet meant the cut-off point on the right.
- The PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely favorable. PDF documents are accurate on the DX as it on a computer screen. You can also drag and drop your documents directly into the device via the USB cable (or use the fee-for-a e-mail if you completely.) The only drawback, at least for documents that I've used so far, I can not adjust the font size as I can with native Kindle documents.
- screen rotation also works as advertised: She works as a mild-zoom of graphics and text, and easily offset the downside of change is not able to process PDF documents to text size. A nice design touch: the four-way navigation on the Kindle 2 is introduced rotational stick-sensitive, and moves relative to the expected screen rotation.
- is more space devoted to the device on the screen, while the white plastic frame around the screen seems to have shrunk, both in general and the proportion of screen compared to plastic on the Kindle 2nd I like this (see below, but) on the keyboard.
- storage media: I like the increase in storage space, and do not mind the lack of an external memory card. I see some people experience problems with this, but only people who have either a) regularly carry around PDF documents amounting to more than 3 to those. 5 GB of disk space or b) about 3,500 pounds must regularly make on their hands. I fall into neither category.
CONS:
- Price: It is expensive, as you can tell pretty quickly. If you value the larger size and the native PDF reader, these functions can justify the roughly 30% premium you pay for the DX on 2nd Kindle In truth, the DX would cost more than the Kindle 2, and a premium of 30% is not unreasonable. But for my money, should the price on the Amazon Kindle drop 2 to $ 300 or so, and invite you $ 400 or less for the DX. Nevertheless, I bought it and will keep it at that price.
- one side navigation buttons: all buttons are now on the right side, and nobody is on the left side. I'm a right-handed, so I should not complain, but I found myself with both sides on the 2nd Kindle Lefties have every reason to complain, I think.
- Small Handling: I often read while I walk with my Kindle in one hand, and something else in my other. Due to the arrangement of buttons, this will be harder on the DX.
- Metal-support: I miss the sticky rubber support on my Kindle 1st When I put my Kindle 1 on an inclined surface, it remained in place. Not so my Kindle 2 and now my DX. This is not a complaint from the specific to the DX, but it's still there.
neutrals (ie, things are remarkable):
- Weight: DX is heavier so palpable. This is only a problem if, like me, regularly ignite with one hand. . . And yet it is still feasible.
- Keyboard: The keyboard is equipped with 4 lines and not 5: In the top row of numbers from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Kindle was merged into the top row qwerty, so the figures now are only accessible with an alt-key combination. The buttons are vertically thin, so that the entire keyboard is no more than 1 "high compared (on a 1st 5" on the Kindle 2). At the same time, the keys themselves are slightly easier to press, a little more than the previous 2nd Kindle For someone with big fingers (like me) will use a slightly harder this keyboard, but only slightly.
I can see. Overall, the pluses outweigh the drawbacks for me, and I am not satisfied with my purchase satisfaction. I can now think with my DX for the working documents for the regular, because the PDF reader. The screen size and screen rotation to make the overall picture even more intense experience.
Overall, the DX more text and less like device, and comes closer to the stated objective of the Kindle: vanish for the device, so that only the joy of reading.

3 0 out of 5 stars DX not quite all, 13 June 2009
By Susan Lynn Umpleby "Susan Umpleby" (Ontario, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I belonged to the K1 and K2 and love them both, and I was really looking forward to the DX. My plan was to DX at home, and my K2 for the implementation of the whole creation with me. It was not long, but in my DX came the day before yesterday in frustration at
Understand recruited me wrong, there is a lot about the DX-like:
1) Images are at it's awesome when they Publisher formats correctly.
2) Those who (beyond the darkness of the text on the K2 is a problem, I've never had to complain to, btw) will be thrilled with very dark text from DX.
3) The ability to rotate the screen is big. Gives you a closer look at things such as maps and diagrams.
4) The browser is a bit faster than on the K1 or K2, but that's not much to say - it is still very clunky to use.
5) But Web pages pretty well on the DX.
6) It is 3500 pounds.
BUT. . . . . DX is not everything. It has disadvantages that make me really think about whether it back before the 30 days until:
1) First and foremost, it is true that it reads PDF files natively, it's really just a PDF viewer * *. You can not change the font size on PDF files, those links will not function and the ability to make the image not on this work. So better with large fonts on your PDF before you upload it. A look at the PDF in the horizontal mode helps a little, but not much.
2) The DX is too big to keep comfortable. It is not that difficult, but it is top-heavy and you feel a pull on his hands. And the draw is really obvious when you use the keyboard, try while you're there - you have virtually the DX was lying flat, it is so hard to tap.
3) You joined the numeric keys with the QWERTY keyboard (and losing a series of buttons). What development opportunities genius thought it would be helpful, and an "improvement" to have the ALT key every time you want to press a number??
4) Before my DX did, I did not really think that would not bother me at all, but I must say: I hate the fact that the "next page" button is only on one side. I mostly use the left button. And yes, the rotation of the DX capability, you can do it on its head by "next page" button on the left side. . . . However, if you do this, the button is so high that you do not push your hand (the thumb, the whole hand) in order to turn the tide. Like nit-picky, but it is really a PITA stop reading to do. Not only that, but under the keyboard on top, it is still top-heavy, as if it is right up!
5), if you turn the DX so that it horizontally, the "next page" button is either the upper or lower end - in any case you can not just flick your thumb and Change the page. Another PITA.
6) If you leave the rotation feature to "Auto" if you're not using your DX It drains the battery, you must remember to disable this function if you Read cease to do.
7) Do you have a folder. An organizational nightmare three times larger than that of K2 (which itself had raised the same problem on the K1): the possibility of saving of 3500 pounds, but only in the position to them by author sort by title, and "most recent first .
I will vigorously debated with me in the next week or so, if I really keep to the DX. It is so disappointing. It has the potential to become a really great e-reader. . . But as it stands now, it is not. It's OK. But for $ 489, it should be much more than just OK.

Verified Amazon Purchase (What is it?)
FIRMWARE UPDATE, 11 30. 2009:
I now have M-Edge Platform Jacket for Kindle DX (Genuine leather - Pebbled Navy) - Back to School Sale! For the Kindle, you can set up to even on the table next to you or a lap desk stand. This makes it easier to download music, pattern, or just books (addressing complaints of some users) as "too hard" to keep for comfort.
I was disappointed that the Kindle goes to sleep automatically after 5 minutes, because if you are using the Kindle for reading patterns or music, this time on you while you are still "working "on one side. However, Amazon come with a new firmware. . . DX is the Kindle now 20 minutes long, before going into screen saver mode, which is a big improvement.
In addition, with the new firmware, you have the option of converting PDF files on your Kindle format - for the lack of "Zoom" and "Note" Properties - Address should at least there is a workaround for now.
UPDATE of 06 16. 2009: The Kindle can just literally saved my career, and saved my "backend". Yesterday I had a conversation and thought I knew where I went. I am not to have one of the last dinosaurs, Garmin and was lost. You drive around for a while more and more nervous about missing my interview, I was reminded of the browser on the Kindle.
The K2 was the browser is basically unusable because of the size. But could the DX, I go to Google Maps, you'll see the address and had my orders in just a few seconds. The card was beautiful and made the turn-by-turn directions can be bookmarked, and even though my DX was asleep, it still aroused the display of the pages. KINDLE THANK YOU!
