  1. I have both 1 and Kindle Kindle 2 owned, so I’m already committed to the fundamental idea: E Ink reading in a slim form factor with a direct connection to a wide range of books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my experience, Kindle, and it is seriously enhanced my reading.

The DX was not the ideal upgrade for me, but I have two functions over the edge of the larger display and the native PDF reader. I now have the DX in my hands, and can PROS, CONS report and neutrals:

    PROS:

    – a larger screen is a definite plus. I use the larger font on my Kindle 2 () older eyes, and in this way I get a lot size of text per page on the DX. That makes the whole experience of reading book-like (and should be a boon to people who buy large-print books.)

    – The screen is sharper and sharper than my Kindle 2 in a side-by-side comparison, the text is darker and the contrast is much better, which for better visibility overall note.

    – On a side, a larger screen makes it is also possible to read, poetry on the Kindle, even with large font sizes. Cut Older Kindle, the smaller screen of lines, so you would lose the feeling that the writer ended the line. On the DX, you can see the entire line is exactly what the poet meant the cut-off in the right place.

    – The PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely favorable. PDF documents are accurate on the DX as it on a computer screen. You can also drag and drop your documents directly into the device via the USB cable (or use the fee-for-a e-mail if you completely.) The only drawback, at least for documents that I’ve used so far, I can not adjust the font size as I can with native Kindle documents.

    – Screen rotation works well as advertised: She works as a mild and zoom graphics Text and slightly offset the downside of not be able to customize PDF documents to text size. A nice design touch: the four-way navigation on the Kindle 2 is introduced rotational stick-sensitive, and moves relative to the expected screen rotation.

    – More space the unit is devoted to the screen, while the white plastic frame around the screen seems to have shrunk, both in general and the proportion of screen compared to the plastic on the 2nd Kindle I like this (see below, but) on the keyboard.

    – Storage media: I like the increase in storage space, and do not mind the lack of an external memory card. I see some people experience problems with this, but only people who have either a) regularly carry around PDF documents amounting to more than 3 to those. 5 GB of disk space or b) about 3,500 pounds must regularly make on their hands. I fall into neither category.

    CONS:

    – Price: It is expensive, as you can tell pretty quickly. If you value the larger size and the native PDF reader, these functions can justify the roughly 30% premium you pay for the DX on 2nd Kindle In truth, the DX would cost more than the Kindle 2, and a premium of 30% is not unreasonable. But for my money, should the price on the Amazon Kindle drop 2 to $ 300 or so, and invite you $ 400 or less for the DX. Nevertheless, I bought it and will keep it at that price.

    – Unilateral navigation keys: all the buttons are now on the right side, and no one is on the left. I’m a right-handed, so I should not complain, but I found myself with both sides on the 2nd Kindle Lefties have every reason to complain, I think.

    – Small Handling: I often read while I walk with my Kindle in one hand, and something else in my other . Due to the arrangement of buttons, this will be harder on the DX.

    – Metal-support: I miss the sticky rubber support on my Kindle 1st When I put my Kindle 1 on an inclined surface, it remained in place. Not so my Kindle 2 and now my DX. This is not a complaint) specific to the DX, but it’s still there.

    Neutrals (forthcoming remarkable things:

    – Weight: DX is heavier so palpable. This is only a problem if, like me, regularly ignite with one hand. . . And yet it is still feasible.

    – Keyboard: The keyboard is equipped with 4 lines and not 5: has been in the top row of numbers from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Kindle into the top qwerty line merged so that the numbers are now only accessible with an Alt key combination. The buttons are vertically thin, so that the entire keyboard is no more than 1 “high compared (on a 1st 5″ on the Kindle 2). At the same time, the keys themselves are slightly easier to press, a little more than the previous 2nd Kindle For someone with big fingers (like me) will use a slightly harder this keyboard, but only slightly.

That’s all I can see. Overall, the pluses outweigh the drawbacks for me, and I am not satisfied with my purchase satisfaction. I can now think with my DX for the working documents for the regular, because the PDF reader. The screen size and screen rotation to make the overall picture even more intense experience.

In total, the DX is more text and less like device, and comes closer to the stated objective of the Kindle: to disappear for the device so that only the joy of reading.

  2. I had the K1 and K2, and the love of the two, so I was really looking forward to the DX. My plan was to DX at home, and my K2 for the implementation of the whole creation with me. It was not long, but in my DX came the day before yesterday, before disappointment set

Do not get me wrong, it’s a lot more than the DX-like:

    1) Images are at it’s awesome when they Publisher formats correctly.

    2) Those who (overnight text on the K2 is a problem which I have never, btw) of very dark text of the DX will be thrilled.

    3) The ability to rotate the screen is big. Gives you a closer look at things such as maps and diagrams.

    4) The browser is a bit faster than on the K1 or K2, but that’s not much to say – it is always still very clunky to use.

    5) But Web pages pretty well on the DX.

    6) It is 3500 pounds. < , br />

BUT. . . . . DX is not everything. It has disadvantages that make me really think about whether it back before the 30 days until:

    1) First and foremost, it is true that it reads PDF files natively, it’s really just a PDF viewer * *. You can not change the font size on PDF files, those links will not function and the ability to make the image not on this work. So better with large fonts on your PDF before you upload it. A look at the PDF in the horizontal mode helps a little, but not much.

    2) The DX is too big to keep comfortable. It is not that difficult, but it is top-heavy and you feel a pull on his hands. And the draw is really apparent when you use the keyboard, try while you’re there – you have virtually the DX was lying flat, it is so hard to tap.

    3) You joined the numeric keys with the QWERTY keyboard (and lose a number of buttons). What development opportunities genius thought it would be helpful, and an “improvement” to have the ALT key every time you want to press a number?

4 ) DX Before I came, I did not really think that would not bother me at all, but I must say: I hate the fact that the “next page” button is only on one side. I mostly use the left button. And yes, the rotation of the DX capability, you can do it on its head by “next page” button on the left side. . . . However, if you do this, the button is so high that you do not push your hand (the thumb, the whole hand) in order to turn the tide. Like nit-picky, but it is really a PITA stop reading to do. Not only that, but under the keyboard on top, it is still top-heavy, as if it is right up!

5), if you turn the DX so that it horizontally, the “next page” button is either the upper or lower end – in any case, you can change not just flick your thumb and the side. Another PITA.

    6) If you leave the rotation feature to “Auto” if you’re not using your DX It drains the battery, so you need to remember that the function disable if you do stop to read.

    7) Still no folder. An organizational nightmare three times larger than that of K2 (which itself had raised the same problem on the K1): the possibility of saving of 3500 pounds, but only in the position to them by author sort by title, and “most recent first .

I will vigorously debated with me in the next week or so, if I really keep to the DX. It is so disappointing. It has the potential to become a really great e-reader. . . But as it stands now, it is not. It’s OK. But for $ 489, it should be much more than just OK.

    FIRMWARE UPDATE, 11 30. 2009:

I now have M-Edge Platform Jacket for Kindle DX (Genuine leather – Pebbled Navy) – Back to School Sale! For the Kindle, you can set up to even on the table next to you or a lap desk stand. This makes it easier to download music, pattern, or just books (addressing complaints of some users as “too hard” to hold comfortably).

I was disappointed that the Kindle automatically goes to sleep after 5 minutes, because if you are using the Kindle for reading patterns or music, this time with you while you are still working “on a page. However, Amazon come with a new firmware. . . DX is the Kindle now 20 minutes long, before going into screen saver mode, which is a big improvement.

In addition, with the new firmware, the possibility of converting PDF Files on your Kindle format – that the lack of “Zoom” and “Note” properties – should address at least there is a workaround for now.

UPDATE of 06 16. 2009: The Kindle can just literally saved my career, and saved my “backend”. Yesterday I had a conversation and thought I knew where I went. I am not to have one of the last dinosaurs, Garmin and was lost. You walk around and for a while more and more nervous about missing my interview, I was reminded of the browser on the Kindle.

The K2 was the browser is basically useless because of the size. But could the DX, I go to Google Maps, you’ll see the address and had my orders in just a few seconds. The card was beautiful and made the turn-by-turn directions can be bookmarked, and even though my DX was asleep, it still aroused the display of the pages. KINDLE THANK YOU!

    ———————————- ———–< br />
The UPS truck came a few hours. I feel like a kid on Christmas and I (almost) everything I wanted!

My Sony PRS-505 finally and officially on my “emergency backup reader” < br />
My romance with ebook reader had a bumpy start when I received my first eInk device – the Bookeen Cybook. Firmware issues and awkward buttons is rather disappointing.

Then I found true love with the Sony PRS-505. I loved the metal casing. I loved the “Collections” (basically folder functions). I loved the look and loved the display.

However woo’ed the Kindle 2 me with the size of its content library. However, for reading, I still have my ultimate favorite Sony.

Now, had with the larger Kindle DX, I think Sony aside, there is a new love in my life. Let me count the ways:

1 Screen Size: reading on the Kindle vs. DX 6 “reader is like the difference between sleeping in a king-size bed vs. a two single beds or riding on the back seat of a 2-door 1981 Honda Accord vs. bucket seats in a Honda Odyssey. You feel Would you like to have air to breathe. The larger screen allows you to maximize the use of property – taking advantage of a larger font and more white space. This makes the text much easier to read – even if you are regularly read books.

2 KEYBOARD: I also love that they have condensed the keyboard so that they do not dominate the overall appearance of the device. The smaller keyboard is in no way affects the ability to type. However, improving the appearance by the proportions of attractive and it means the device is not greater than the frighteningly 6 “device.

3 PDF + BIG SCREEN = LOTS more uses I can transfer my knitting patterns (complete with graphs and charts, knitting) and cello music to my e-reader.

The Kindle for knitting – I is my place in the knitting patterns highlight to make it easier to work complicated stitch patterns.

I play cello and many of my books are in PDF format – including the Kindle is for the beautifully detailed all my music with me at once. Turning pages is faster and easier than with a physical book. The ignition sits well on the music stand (if you want the professional standing of the music is bigger than the Kindle or the Kindle is “top heavy” make the ground pushed forward, and possibly the state.
4 screen rotation – you can rotate the screen in any direction, and the site quickly reoriented. You can rotate 360 degrees and the screen will always follow you. The keys remain the same, but the thumb-stick and directed new, so if push legislation relative to the current direction, which always means “Next Page”, no matter what direction you are in.

If you are left handed and really only with the Buttons on the right to feel upset, you can put the device on its head and voila – now your keys are located on the left.

5 BUTTON CONFIGURATION – I actually prefer to the next page and back on the same page and in a contiguous location (as opposed to both sides of the device, such as the Kindle 2, opposite). It makes one-handed reading easier to achieve, without attention to the other side of the device rotate back and forth to . bound

6 SOLID feeling – I like to feel the heavier – it is comparable with the magazine a book.

While 7th READING charging – that sounds a little bit, but what can the Sony when the device is plugged in for charging, you do not read on the device at the same time.

There are two things that I still think that Sony can not be better:

1 COLLECTIONS: It would be nice to have folders so that music could, for technical books from knitting patterns etc. . is the lack of folders separated separated is still angry at the DX because you probably have an even wider range of library books / documents for which there is.

2 EPUB SUPPORT: ePUB would allows users to acquire content from public libraries, and virtually every other online ebookseller. But that’s basically why Amazon is not doing that… they want to get only the content they receive. Honest I said, the ability to PDF files, without a series of e-mail you back into perspective here is a giant leap forward and I think it’s a kind of “baby steps” thing.
< br /> Sony has just really dropped the ball does not get a larger size. You would not think that would make a few extra inches on the screen that much of a difference in regard to your reading pleasure. But then again, and Although a 17 “monitor on a 19″ monitor is a big difference in terms of usability of a computer screen.

All in all, really – Amazon is a brilliant move with the DX. It is clear that they are truly the little things that were, at the time and the DX is a substantial improvement compared to the K2. I am very very happy!

Let me say first that I bought my Kindle every day and DX. I thought of writing this review about how well for some time. If it’s produced goes to defeat it, all eReaders on the market – and the tide is now the market – with the same E-Ink panels of the same company, usually have the same features as far as reading an actual book, etc. If this would be a niche product in a market is no real competition as the product of a much higher estimate obtained. However, it is now a market with many opportunities. The only way to writing about it is a fair review is to assume that there are some basic functions that exist (Wireless Access, Reader image quality, basic zoom / bookmark functions, etc.) that have all the e-reader now . The review should be what unique about the Kindle DX and review of these functions. If you download one book and read an e-Ink panel than any single e-reader on the market today are operating properly.

To this end, when it is what the DX unique, I must honestly say that I would not buy this reader again – there are better options out there with several announced just. After careful consideration, it is clear that Amazon only felt that they could get with a sub-par device based on their name and market position.

    1) PDF issues : This is a larger format readers, presumably for the purpose of reading standard size documents (8. 5 “to 11″). It is also hard to be marketed to students. Both require full native PDF support. While the DX Kindle PDF’s not do it, it does so in an extremely deformed way. While I am well versed with the fact that some PDF’s are shown as images and the document itself contains no links or text, the most. Despite the fact that the Kindle, you can change the font size, add to bookmarks, highlight text, use the dictionary feature, zoom, or use of any links (ie the index), etc. In other words, it does, that the pages as images, and offers absolutely zero “Digital Control” on the documents – the very features that anyone would want an electronic reader, for instead of a hard copy. I bought the unit as an engineer, because I hundreds of (PDF manuals, client systems, documentation, etc.) have. I’ve found that I absolutely do not make it for the reason why I bought it for use. Other readers PDF’s to be treated like any other document, which all have the same e-reader functions, and there is no reason – a brief does not want to pay Adobe a license fee – this is the Kindle does not have this functionality.

    2) File Formats: While Kindle supports DX support different file formats, is Amazon are one of the few objectors to the provision of content in a DRM-protected proprietary format. In addition, do not read many industry-standard formats. CHM and LIT are two of the major formats that come to mind. Many publishers – especially art books – Release in CHM format, essentially a slightly marked up HTML derivative, which should be easy to make. MOBI and others come and mind – with more than 1,000,000 public domain titles in many Web sites in these other formats. Yes, I understand the content protection – but Amazon has overboard in trying to block the Kindle have gone to only “all functions” on their proprietary format. These locks save when purchasing eBooks from the Kindle to. I do understand the financial drive – but most of our documents, we have created, or content, which we acquired earlier for other platforms and rights that we would read on the Kindle. Devices that have access to their own formats, usually given away or sold for a very low price, with the proviso that the profit made on the content (think about some of the original movie-on-demand set-top devices ). Amazon is selling this as a standalone device and must not intentionally cripple it. And yes, there are tools to convert the file type – which is usually due to formatting issues and the burden should be placed on the end user.

    3) File System Flaws: Amazon advertises the ability to keep books to 3,500 + / document () is a huge exaggeration in itself. Although it instead of 350 titles, the file system has a huge problem. There are no options for any type of folder structure. You have to go into one big flat list of documents for the reader and hit Next again and again – a painfully slow process in itself – and hope not do not miss the title you are looking for and have to start over. A: Yes, the tracks begin in alphabetical order, but they are changing in most read recently moved to the top based. It is a ridiculous and unrealistic expectations for more than a few dozen documents on a device without the possibility of putting them to organize into folders. The official Amazon Answer: You can search by tags and tags. Yes, you can – and if you want to take the few weeks would be needed in order tags to a few thousand PDF’s then you have much more free time when I did not add. The Kindle has been acquired in order to save time – not to take advantage of all of my annual leave time to organize them.

    4) No card reader decided: For unknown reasons, the Amazon, to not any type of card reader. The memory can hold a large number of books – but PDF’s get to 100 MB or more if they are displayed graphically strong. The memory can not be updated, it should be a way to pop on a memory card. All my cell phones have had this feature. . . and my $ 500 Kindle DX not?

    5) Ergonomics: I admit that the e-reader market is emerging, then it is not a large pool of users to draw comments. That is, it appears that the Kindle DX made it through the art department and skipped the usability testing department. While it looks good and everyone should be taken to the 5-way joystick, which (the absence of the next / previous page buttons on either side of the existing models to the present) and the absolute worst keyboard I ever touched not help the device. Again – will be marketed to students and professional services – looking only at the official page on the website of Amazon. What’s on the screen as on the largest picture? It is a power chart – not a page from a New York Times bestseller list. There should be a way to quickly type notes on things. There is no way a student could sit in his lecture, and scroll pages and be able to type in notes and keep the class on this thing – totally unrealistic.

6 ) not a desktop application: While Amazon advertises the fact that no computer is needed, they can point out that even if you had one, there is not really anything you could do so. There should be some stolen application similar to Apple’s iTunes to convert the file formats and to enable auto-organization of files and folders (if present), may apply to the backup device lost / damaged / and should be replaced, etc. This is especially especially for students who would like a full size keyboard to add notes to documents / books and in sync with the Kindle.

Conclusion: The Kindle DX is a very large e-reader for someone who wants to just read books, Kindle content and comfortable buying only wish is simply a bigger screen. This is what I am now using it. To this end, it works great. If this is your only hope – then the credit card. When using fantasies actually having to read PDF’s with all the functions to store a large number of documents, use it in a classroom, etc. Then another e-reader and sacrifice battery life and get a tablet or laptop and wait for the next generation.

My Kindle DX 30th July sent. I really liked it until today. It is a white to about 1 / 12 of the screen so that you can not read many words on the page and the text runs veritical and horizontally at the same time. The product was not deleted or otherwise damaged during use. When I Amazon Kindle support they said they had never heard of problems, even though I told them I found in a few seconds on the net. They asked me to reset, what I did, but the problem remained. They told me that the problem is not covered by the warranty !!!!!!!!!!! I asked how she could know that without looking at the device and she said it was not known list of manufacturers defects. They told me not to even bother sending it in for warranty service but if I new I could pay $ 250. 00! I spoke with 2 supervisors at the Washington call center, which gave me the same direction. Amazon is not standng behind this product, and this is the worst example of poor customer service that I encountered. I asked her how she could have a technical diagnosis over the phone and they had no good answer, but time and again that it is not a covered defect. I asked her why she was not simply say: “Send it, and we take a look to throw,” and she said it was a waste of time because it does not control (though 3000 miles away from unity and not seen ) You wobbled when I explanantion of a written denial of warranty service calls (for me that is a breach of contract. DX Kindle: Amazon 9th 7 “Wireless Reading Device (New Generation) DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves. They have lost a valuable and loyal customer to this day.
